Ace Signs an Agreement with Sonoco Alcore to Build a Beverage Carton Recycling Plant

The Alliance for Beverage Cartons & the Environment (ACE) UK, comprising of Tetra Pak, SIG Combibloc and Elopak, has entered into an agreement with paper producer Sonoco Alcore to set up a beverage carton recycling plant near Halifax.

Proposed plant would be capable of recycling 25,000 tons of cartons sorted from household and commercial waste streams starting 2013.

ACE aims to develop a UK market for the recycling of used beverage cartons which would enable authorities with no-export policies on waste to recycle cartons in the UK, as Kerbside coverage and carton recycling rates are expected to increase.

Carbon footprint would drop further and, in turn, valuable materials will go back into the UK economy and local authorities could meet the expectations of shareholders, according to the firm.

ACE UK chief executive Richard Hands said the decision underlines the firm commitment of Tetra Pak, SIG Combibloc and Elopak to improve beverage cartons' environmental performance.

As a result of cooperation between ACE UK and local authorities, 89% of households can recycle cartons as carton collection of beverages is really high.
