LED TVs will account for 100% of Samsung and 90% of LG's TV products in 2013. Direct-lit LED TVs have lower production costs compared to side-lit LED TVs, which is beneficial in increasing LED TV penetration rate.
Samsung's 40-inch thin-type direct-lit LED TV backlight modules cost 25% lower than side-lit modules, said Digitimes Research. As for LG, the costs of its 50-inch direct-lit LED TV panels are 8.4% lower than the cost of side-lit panels.
In 2013, Samsung plans to introduce thick (93mm) and thin (49.5mm) TV models while LG plans to introduce direct-lit Led TVs with an average thickness of 78mm.
As Samsung and LG focus on promoting direct-lit LED TVs in 2013, South Korea-based LED packaging houses and backlight module providers are likely to see revenue growth.
