Greenpak's 12-Member Team Operates From Its Offices

Malta-based GreenPak said the country's packaging waste recovery efforts were falling short of its European quotas as the process is split between two operators.

GreenPak's 12-member team, which operates from its offices in Fgura and is involved in a nationwide scheme, claims it could do much more if it were not hindered from expanding further, according to timesofmalta.com.

According to the organization, fragmentation at the scheme level is coming in the way of higher recycling performance in a tiny nation like Malta.

GreenPak Coop Society chief executive Mario Schembri claimed GreenPack is the only organization which is capable of operating a cost-effective waste recovery scheme backed by PRO Europe that helps in avoiding costly errors.

"Our objective is to recover material for recycling at the least possible cost. We have said this in 2004 and, here we are in 2012 still saying the same thing," added Schembri.

European Commission's Directorate General for the Environment published country-wise packaging recycling data per country and per material in 2009, which showed Malta at the bottom of the table for being able to recover only about 10% of waste.

Eurostat figures released in March show Malta diverted 86% of its municipal waste to landfills, while 7% was recycled and 6% headed for the compost.
