US-based paperboard packaging company Zumbiel Packaging has joined the EPA's Green Power Partnership (GPP), as part of an ongoing commitment to sustainable business practices.
The company has proposed to purchase 5% of its electricity from renewable sources in an attempt to minimize the environmental impact of its operations.
As part of GPP, Zumbiel purchased Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) for wind energy.
According to the company, by shifting 5% of its use to sustainable wind energy it can avoid about 544t of CO2 emissions a year.
Zumbiel Packaging marketing director Tom Zumbiel said, "By purchasing wind power, Zumbiel Packaging is able to engage with our local community on environmental issues, do our part to protect the environment and take a leadership position in supporting a sustainable future."
The voluntary program US GPP seeks to offset carbon emissions by increasing the use of renewable sources of energy.
