According to statistics, the heavy plates sold by the three major steelmakers in Korea, Posco, Dongkuk Steel and Hyundai Steel totaled 679,000 tons in March, falling by 5.5% from a month ago and hitting the lowest level since 2011. Industry sources said that the decreased sale volumes of heavy plates were caused by weak demand from shipbuilders and sluggish economy. Meanwhile, the production of heavy plates totaled 650,000 tons, down by 45,000 tons from a month earlier and decreasing by 300,000 tons year on year. It’s said that the Korean steelmakers have sought to sell heavy plates to overseas markets due to weak demand from domestic market.
