WITH energy companies hiking their prices by around 10%, businesses are increasingly turning to energy saving lighting to make savings.
“Hundreds, if not thousands of pounds can be saved over the lifetime of the product with average savings of 61% for an LED tube compared to a 6ft standard fluorescent tube,” said LampShopOnline Director Matthew Beswick.
“We have seen a significant increase in enquiries from businesses shocked by energy company price hikes and looking to make savings on their bottom line in other ways. In particular, we have seen enquiries from public sector companies, hospitals, really big offices where changes like this can make a massive impact.“
“Traditionally, LED lighting has been criticised as initial prices are higher, but tax savings are available. Add to this that LEDs tubes last much longer at an average of around ten years. This coupled with smaller maintenance costs, a direct retrofit of 2ft-6ft tubes, plus their sustainable credentials and it is no wonder LED lighting is the fastest selling form of lighting on the market.”
LEDs or light-emitting diodes are semi-conductors that make old-fashioned lightbulbs (incandescent) and even the newer energy saving bulbs (compact fluorescents) look incredibly inefficient. A typical 35W halogen replacement will use as little as 4W, considerably less than the 10W. Furthermore, replacing fluorescent tubes with LED tubes removes all maintenance costs incurred by lighting – there is no need for control gear and you may only need to change the tube once every ten years!
James Russill, technical development manager at the Energy Saving Trust, said: “If customers are prepared to pay the up-front higher cost they will quickly calculate that they should see a return on their investment within the first couple of years.”
