A sportier version of Proton’s small sedan, the Proton Preve GXR, has launched in Australia from $22,990 driveaway – a price that includes a $1000 cash back bonus.
The Proton Preve GXR is powered by the same turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine found in the seven-seat Proton Exora, developing 103kW at 5000rpm and 205Nm between 2000-4000rpm, and claiming combined cycle fuel consumption of 8.6 litres per 100km.
The Preve GXR is the new flagship of the range, sitting above the $15,990 driveaway 80kW/150Nm Proton Preve that arrived locally in February.
Currently only available tied to a ‘seven-speed’ continuously variable transmission (CVT) with steering wheel-mounted paddleshifters, a six-speed manual Preve GXR is due to arrive in early 2014 priced from $21,990 driveaway.
With electronic stability control, brake assist and six airbags (dual front, side and curtains) all standard, the GXR follows in the footsteps of the base Preve in achieving a five-star ANCAP safety rating.
Reverse parking sensors, automatic LED headlights and active hazard lights are also standard equipment along with push-button start, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, climate control, satellite navigation, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity.
A leather-wrapped steering wheel, electric folding side mirrors, a rear spoiler, 10-spoke 16-inch wheels and Lotus-developed suspension (Proton owns the British performance brand) complete the package.
The Malaysian manufacturer says the 2014 model year Preve GXR will also add leather upholstery to the mix when it arrives next year.
Available in four colours – Solid White, Genetic Silver, Fire Red, and Tranquillity Black – the Proton Preve GXR comes with a five-year/150,000km warranty, five years/75,000km free servicing and five years/150,000km free roadside assist.
