New York's Garment District Is Going on at Manhattan's Skyscraper Museum

A retrospective exhibit tour into the narrow and busy lanes of New York’s once-thriving fashion design and manufacturing hub Garment District is going on at Manhattan’s Skyscraper Museum.

Titled as ‘Urban Fabric: Building New York’s Garment District’, the pop-up exhibit, which will run till October 31, 2013, aims to celebrate the architecture and urban history of the glorious apparel manufacturing industry.

Curated by the professor of Historic Preservation at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Andrew S. Dolkart, the displayed exhibits include photographs, architectural drawings, films and advertisements from the storied garment manufacturing industry.

Started sometime during the early 20th century, the Garment District, which used to employ more than 100,000 people once, had the largest number of skyscraper factories in the world.
