Hydraulic cylinders are quite reliable but are subject to several conditions. Whether these cylinders would function effectively for a long term or not, would depend on how they were manufactured. It is indicated by research that if the cylinder is designed properly and if the process of manufacturing is done in the best possible way, then they would function for a long term without much botheration. However, this is possible only if these cylinders are checked and maintained on a regular basis. Everyone would obviously know that the cylinders are complicated and so maintaining them is also a difficult task. Given below are some tips for maintaining the cylinder systems effectively.
The bent rod should be checked and corrected
The case of bent rods being found in the cylinder systems only if there are flaws related to designing. Some common causes that lead to bent rods include irregular mounting arrangement, insufficient rod diameter and others. Even if materials of poor quality are used, these problems may occur. However, if the problem is not corrected with time, the whole system can be damaged. Thus, the rod present in the system should be checked on a regular basis for straightness.
Ballooning of the cylinder tube
The ballooning of cylinder tube can be impacted to a great extent owing to operating pressure. This would lead to breaking of seal and the fluid would be leaked. However, if proper attention is not paid to the problem then the cylinder would not work as efficiently as it should. Hence, periodical checking of the tubes should be done so that maximum efficiency is ensured.
The bearing area should be checked
This is a very important step when it comes to effective maintenance. This will make sure that the seal lasts long. If there is insufficient bearing area, a huge load would be placed on piston seals. This load is very high the seals cannot withstand this. Thus, for a long term, the seals would fail and a complete replacement would be needed for sealing systems. The bearing area should be checked to see if there are any abnormalities. If there are any, they should be corrected so that the seals get a long life.
The surface finish of the rod should be checked
A rod requires being particularly rough at times. However, if lot of roughness is seen in the surface, then there are chances that the fluid may leak. However, if the surface is very smooth, then the life of the seal is seen to be lowered. The surface should be checked periodically for making sure that the expected standards are met. Thus, if all the parts are maintained and checked long life will be ensured and the hydraulic cylinders would work effectively.
