Swiss packaging giant Tetra Pak has unveiled a new version of its Tetra Top carton package in the US, with Just water.
Made with 82% renewable resources, the bio-based Tetra Top package is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 74% compared to a range of PET plastic bottles.
The new paper- and plant-based bottle's cap and top are made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) derived from sugarcane.
Tetra Pak product management and commercial operations executive vice-president Charles Brand said: "Packages made from renewable materials are not only good for the environment, but also offer our customers a competitive advantage.
"Consumers choose JUST water because they appreciate its brand values, and want this to be reflected in the whole user experience. We are pleased to have come up with a package that is aligned with this focus without compromising convenience and functionality."
Tetra Top's main sleeve is made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paperboard that increases its renewable content from 53% to 82%, with zero impact to its recyclability.
JUST CEO Grace Jeon said: "Compared with different types of plastic water bottles, this bottle innovation significantly reduces the product's carbon footprint which aligns well with our business ethos."
The new plant-based JUST water bottle is planned to be made available thought the US by summer 2016.
