Cook Medical has introduced a new venous self-expanding stent in Canada, designed to restore blood flow in obstructed iliofemoral veins caused due to post-thrombotic syndrome (PCT).
The Zilver Vena stent, which is compatible with 7 Fr sheaths and 9 Fr guiding catheters, provides flexibility, consistent radial force, and continuous stent-to-vein wall apposition from end to end.
A study conducted by Rosales, a spokesperson at Oslo University Hospital's vascular surgery department, demonstrated that PCT characterized by reflux and/or obstruction can be expected to develop in up to 40% of DVT patients.
The company said the stent, which it has showcased at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery, is available in 14 and 16 mm diameters and 60, 100 and 140 mm lengths to enable precise placement.
Cook Medical peripheral intervention clinical division vice president Rob Lyles said, "As the only device of its kind available in Canada, Zilver Vena gives physicians a new treatment option for stenting diseased veins."
The Zilver Vena stent, which is currently under regulatory review by the US Food and Drug Administration, is not approved for sale in the US.
