Fred Williams is now working with the design team at The Green Board Game Co. to turn Summit Up in to a working prototype.
A seven-year-old boy from Northumberland has been named the Young Games Inventor of the Year.
Fred Williams from Alnwick was given the title during last week’s London Toy Fair, where he was championed for his mathematically challenging game, Summit Up.
The game challenges players to race to the top of a mountain, completing sums along the way. The winner is the first person to reach the summit.
The young inventor from Swansfield Park First School entered his cranium-busting game in to a national competition last summer.
Williams’ entry was shortlisted in an online vote when he received 278 votes from members of the public.
He was then awarded a day trip to the capital’s Toy Fair where he was interviewed by the press and given exclusive access to some of the hottest toys of 2015.
Along with being awarded the Young Games Inventor of the Year, Williams was also given the chance to pick out his own prize – a stack of board game measuring his own height.
“Last year. Fred’s favourite subject was maths and we had just climbed up Kinder Scout n Derbyshire – so that was the inspiration behind Summit Up,” mother Katherine Williams told the Northumberland Gazette.
“He spent a lot of the summer coming up with the idea, and then we made up the game on a piece of cardboard in the garden in one day.”
Over the coming months, the budding board game brainiac will spend time with the design and production team at The Green board Game Co to finalise the design of Summit Up, before receiving a prototype of the finished product to take home.
“We have been amazed at the rich talent of young people across the country who are dreaming up clever, often educational, new board games,” said Gary Wyatt, founder of The Green Board Game Co.
“The Young Games Inventor of the Year was all about unearthing this hidden talent and celebrating it – and we have done that by giving Fred a memorable day at Britain’s biggest toy and games show.”
