Godalming's The Toy Box Closes Over Financial Reasons

Owners, Steve Mohabir and his wife Tracey opened the toy store in 2009 as a tribute to their two year old son Marcus and friends Toby and Kate Beasley who died in a car crash in 2004.

Surrey toyshop, The Toy Box has decided to close its doors citing financial reasons and low footfall in the area as key reasons.

Owners, Steve Mohabir and his wife Tracey opened the toy store in 2009 as a tribute to their two year old son Marcus and friends Toby and Kate Beasley who died in a car crash in 2004.

Talking to Get Surrey, Mohabir blamed a drop in footfall in the Godalming area as the main reason for the shop’s closure.

“Unfortunately it just wasn’t large enough, we have a few loyal customers but so many businesses have moved out of Godalming and there are fewer and fewer people who come in.

“Eight independent toy shops have already closed this year because of everyone shopping on the internet.

“The industry calls toy shops like this Amazon’s window shop because people will come in for ideas and then buy the toy online.”

The Toy Box in Wharf Street was made popular among locals for its selection of old-fashioned sweets, retro children’s games and modern lines.

“We really tried to be a true community shop, working with local PTAs, charities and festivals and it’s been really fun owning the shop.

“It’s a real shame we have to close but the rent is too high for what we’re making.”
