First Patients Are Treated by Barricade Coil System

Blockade Medical has reported that the first patients have been treated with the Barricade Coil system to treat cerebral aneurysms.

The Barricade Coil system, an embolization coil line, is designed to remove or endovascularly occlude blood flow in vascular abnormalities of the neurovascular and peripheral vessels.

National Institute for Neurosciences interventional neuroradiology chief Istvan Szikora said a total of 5 broad neck aneurysms were treated using the Barricade Coil system either exclusively or in combination with other commercially available products.

"Various aneurysm morphologies were treated which ranged from a 5mm un-ruptured aneurysm to a 20mm ruptured lesion," Szikora added.

"The Barricade coils performed well in those cases in which balloon remodeling was planned and carried out as well as in those in which balloon assistance was thought unnecessary.

"The Barricade coils allowed for sufficient aneurysm packing without significant micro catheter instability and with no complications in all cases."

Blockade Medical chief executive officer Gibb Clarke said, "We look forward to full market commercialization in regions that recognize the CE Mark, officially, we plan to launch The Barricade Coil System at the ESMINT Congress from September 6-8, 2012 in Nice, France."
