Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will form a strategic partnership with LED epitaxial wafer and chip maker Epistar by having its subsidiary, TSMC Solid State Lighting, sell MOCVD sets to Epistar and then acquiring new shares to be issued by Epistar for a 5-10% stake, according to Chinese-language newspaper Economic Daily News (EDN).
Epistar will merge with TSMC Solid State Lighting and become the surviving company, EDN said, adding the TSMC subsidiary grows LED epitaxial wafers on Si-based substrates instead of sapphire wafers.
