Canada to Enhance Clean Vehicle Technologies

Government of Canada has launched next phase of the ecoTECHNOLOGY as part of its move to enhance clean vehicle technologies and offer cleaner transportation alternative.

Canada Transport, Infrastructure and Communities Minister Denis Lebel said, "This program will assess the safety and environmental performance of new vehicle technologies to ensure that innovations can be introduced in Canada in a safe and timely manner."

The $38m ecoTECHNOLOGY for Vehicles Program is a five-year programme for testing new vehicle technologies and to develop safety and environmental regulations, along with industry codes and standards.

Test results will assist the government to line up vehicle regulations in North America to reduce and put off barriers to cross-border trade, reducing costs for business and consumers, and supporting economic growth.

The new technology will also test heavy-duty trucks and a broader range of technologies.

The programme was funded by government in Budget 2011 under of a group of Clean Transportation Initiatives as part renewing the Government of Canada's Clean Air Agenda.

These initiatives will also focus on lining up Canadian regulations as of the US and with international standards, and enhancing the transportation system efficiency as well as upgrading clean technologies.

According to the government, the initiatives are expected to reduce reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 17% from 2005 levels by 2020.
