The Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, SK Panda recently visited Gurgaon’s leading fashion institute, the Institute of Apparel Management (IAM).
During his visit, Panda actively interacted with the faculty and students of IAM. He was impressed by the work of the students and the facilities provided at the campus. He lauded the meticulous work done by the students in exploration with waste papers using recycling technique, macramé, split braiding, and surface embroidery. He also visited IAM’s State of Art facilities and visited the training of 100+ pattern masters being upgraded on technological platform over the last two years.
While addressing the students, Panda said, “Sustainable fashion will be the key to a better future, as the concerns on ecology and environment has become the main focus in the new millennium.”
He urged the students to take inclusive approach in fashion and design while empowering craftsmen and artisans of India to promote Indian textile products.
The fashion sector in India can only be promoted if students link their creativity aspiration and design work to various crafts of India building a long-term and a sustainable model to leverage the extinct crafts, he added.
He also stated that new mantra of ‘zero-defect, zero-effect’ shall be imbibed by the apparel industry for its overall growth and development. He told the students that besides holistic approach, team-work as a culture should also be adopted.
IAM, supported by AEPC, and Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, was launched in September 2007.
IAM’s significant contribution is hailed as a Generation Next Institution and as India’s first B- School in fashion, design, and technology supported by the entire apparel industry positioned as a multi-varsity.
Apparel is one of the potential sectors identified for increasing trade and investment in India, and taking this drive forward, IAM is establishing compliance standardization, quality assurance, and competitive enhancement in the apparel industry. (GK)
