General Motors Co. sold upward of 9.7 million vehicles worldwide in 2013, 4% more than in 2012, the company said Wednesday. Sales in the company’s China and United Kingdom markets accounted for the largest year-over-year gains at 11% each. Deliveries in the United States grew 7%.
Chevrolet, GM’s keystone brand, accounted for 51% of those worldwide deliveries with a record 4,984,126 units sold, the company said, 19,304 more than in 2012. The company launched the latest version of its best-selling full-size pickup truck, the Silverado, last year. It was not clear how much of that factored into the 2013 numbers.
“A healthy auto market in the United States and China and very successful product launches at all of our brands worldwide drove GM’s growth in 2013, and helped us navigate difficult conditions in Europe and parts of South America and Asia,” Chief Financial Officer Dan Ammann said in a release.
GM’s other brands also gained in 2013 compared with 2012. Buick’s sales of just over 1 million units represented a 15% increase. Dealers sold more than 1 million Opel/Vauxhall-brand units, and Cadillac’s sales jumped 22% in the United States.
