Logistics company DHL will open some South Australian Drop Zones seven days a week between 8am and 4pm to help South Australians preparing for the digital switch on 2 April.
DHL Supply Chain's five South Australian drop zones based in Heathfield, Pookara, Lonsdale and Beverly are open 7 days a week to assist those wanting to get rid of old and unwanted analogue televisions. The Drop Zone located in Edinburgh North is open 6 days a week (closed Monday).
Senior director of service logistics, envirosolutions and emerging sectors at DHL Supply Chain Peter Bruce says disposing of analogue televisions at an approved drop zone gives people assurance their e-waste will be recycled correctly.
"With the digital switch over, we realise there will be many people needing to get rid of old and unwanted analogue TVs. Our longer opening hours offer the community flexibility on when they can drop their e-waste off, plus peace of mind that the e-waste will be diverted from landfill.
"Since 30 July, we have collected more than 700 tonnes of e-waste in Adelaide and expect to see a continued increase in volumes this year," said Bruce.
DHL Supply Chain was the first organisation approved to deliver services under the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme and now has more than 140 drop zones located across seven States and Territories. DHL has been collecting and recycling e-waste since May 2012 and has a target to collect and recycle 18,500 tonnes by 30 June 2013.
The National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme involves a combination of government regulation and industry action to help reduce the amount of television and computer waste going to landfill and increase the recovery of resources. The scheme aims to boost the recycling rate of these products from 30 per cent in 2012-13 to 80 per cent by 2021-22.
The industry-funded National and Computer Recycling Scheme is regulated by the Australian Government under the landmark Product Stewardship Act 2011 and Product Stewardship (Television and Computer) Regulations 2011.
