Montreal-based Gildan Activewear Inc. has announced plans to invest more than $200 million over the next two years to build and start up two state-of-the-art yarn-spinning facilities in the Southern United States to support projected sales growth and reinforce the company's global low-cost manufacturer status. Potential sites for the plants are currently under evaluation.

This latest announcement follows news reported previously that the company would build a new ring-spun yarn-spinning facility in Salisbury, N.C., and refurbish and modernize open-end plants in Cedartown, Ga., and Clarkton, N.C. (See " Gildan Completes CanAm Acquisition, Expands Yarn-Spinning Operations," TextileWorld.com, January 8, 2013). In all, Gildan expects the announced investments will create more than 700 jobs in addition to bolstering the company's U.S. operations within its vertically integrated manufacturing platform.
