Officeworks has reported a 0.7 per cent increase in sales to $1.5 billion in the full year to June 30.

Wesfarmers’ home improvement and office supplies group managing director John Gillam said the office supplies division experienced strong transaction growth across all channels, particularly online, but this was countered by “deflationary headwinds” in the technology and furniture categories.

Sales in the fourth quarter were down 1.1 per cent to $365 million.

Gillam said transactions and units sold across all channels were well above last year.

To offset the “challenging trading conditions”, Gillam said the business was “working hard to improve the customer offer”.

During the fourth quarter, Officeworks opened three stores, taking the total to 139 nationally.

Wesfarmers also reported that Bunnings increased sales by 5.6 per cent to $7.1 billion during the year while Target sales were down 1.8 per cent to $3.7 billion. Kmart sales were steady at $4 billion.

BIG W sales up slightly

Woolworths reported a 0.5 per cent increase in sales to $4.1 billion at Big W for the year to June 30.

Woolworths’ new home improvement division, comprising 15 Masters stores, reported sales of $825 million for the full year.
