The Penetration Rate for LED TVs Is Expected to Reach 70% in 2012

The penetration rate for LED TVs is expected to reach 70% in 2012 as direct-type models are increasingly dropping in price.

In Taiwan, 32-inch direct-type models are currently under NT$10,000 (US$335) while 42-inch models are under NT$20,000. TV prices are closing the gap between CCFL and LED models and TV vendors are continuing to release various LED models to meet the needs of local consumers.

Energy-saving subsidies issued by the China and Taiwan governments have also played a role in raising the penetration rate for LED TVs, according to recent Digitimes reports. The subsidies, both of which provide roughly US$60 in funding per a TV set, have been successful in pushing up TV sales on both sides, and TV sales in China are expected to increase as it is the world's largest TV market at present.

Additionally, Korea-based Samsung Electronics has even stated it is stopping CCFL production in order to further promote LED models while LG Electronics is continuing to drop prices for its LED models.

Meanwhile, Sharp and Foxconn Electronics are planning to put out a 60-inch sized LCD TV, which is causing other TV vendors to develop 50-inch and above low-priced LED models to stay competitive in the market.
