Retail Sales of Printers Steady: GfK

Retail sales of the total printing market have increased marginally in the three months to June compared to the corresponding period last year, according to newly-released data from research firm GfK.

Just over 54,000 laser and LED printers were sold between April and June this year, 3000 more than were sold in the same period in 2011 but approximately 9600 less than were sold in the first quarter of 2012.

GfK data, sourced from information supplied by major retailers, showed that nearly 290,000 inkjet printers were sold in the June quarter, which was about the same number sold in the previous corresponding period.

GfK's data also showed that sales of laser/LED multi-function devices and printers priced under $50 are now at a similar level to inkjet printers.

While colour laser/LED printers accounted for 19 per cent of unit sales between January and July this year, they represented 41 per cent in dollar value.

Within the inkjet printing market, 'wireless printing' is increasing. This accounted for a value share of 77 per cent between January and July this year.
