Shanghai GM, a joint venture between US carmaker General Motors (GM) and China based Shanghai Automotive Industry (SAIC), has launched the Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback, which is aimed at younger car buyers across China.
Shanghai GM noted that the new hatchback combines the style of a five-door car with the qualities associated with the Cruze sedan.
The vehicle is available in three variants 1.6 SE MT, 1.6 SE AT and 1.6T AT. The 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine comes with a manual or automatic transmission, while the 1.6-liter Ecotec turbocharged engine is matched with a six-speed automatic transmission.
The turbocharged engine has a maximum power of 135 kW and peak torque of 235 Nm in the 2,000-5,600 rpm range. The engine's output is 84.4 kW/L, which ensures steady power. In addition, the engine's Super Boost technology can increase torque to 266 Nm within five seconds.
Shanghai GM president Wang Xiaoqiu said that the Cruze hatchback is aimed at younger car buyers who value a practical yet progressive lifestyle.
"Like the Cruze sedan, the Cruze hatchback is destined to be a trendsetter in its segment," Xiaoqiu added.
The Cruze features a European crossover design, the first of its kind in the segment. The Cruze hatchback has 40-degree curves instead of traditional right angles.
The Cruze hatchback has a length of 4,510 mm, which longer than that of an ordinary hatchback and close to the length of a traditional sedan. Its 2,685-mm wheelbase maximizes load space.
The 1.6T AT variant comes with sporty 17-inch wheels. All variants are available with a choice of six exterior colors. The Chevrolet dealers nationwide are taking pre-orders for Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback.
