It’s reported that the Brazilian steelmakers may fail to raise prices for steel flat products due to weak steel prices in international market and low-priced imports into the Brazilian market. In the first quarter of this year, the Brazilian steelmakers including Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (CSN) and Usiminas and ArcelorMittal Brasil hiked the prices for steel flat products for two times. In January, CSN increased the prices for hot rolled coils (HRC) by 7.2% and hiked the prices for cold rolled coils (CRC) and hot dipped galvanized steel products by 3.5% respectively. Usiminas increased the prices for heavy plates and HRC by 5% respectively. ArcelorMittal Brasil increased the prices for hot rolled sheets by 8% and it hiked the prices for CRC and galvanized steel sheets by 4% respectively. In end of February, Usiminas announced to increase its prices for steel flats by 6%~12% for March. ArcelorMittal Brasil announced to raise the prices for HRC, CRC and galvanized steel sheets by 7.32%, 4.9% and 7.23% respectively, effective from March 3th. Besides, CSN hiked its prices for HRC, CRC and galvanized steel sheets by 7%, 6% and 8% respectively, effective from March 12nd. It’s learned that the Brazilian steelmakers have sought to increase the prices for steel flat products by 5%~8% early May. However, Brazil’s imports of steel flat surged substantially by 28.9% year on year to hit 133,900 tons in April, according to data released by National Institute of Steel Distributors (INDA). Therefore, industry sources said that the Brazilian steelmakers might fail to increase the prices for steel flats due to increased low-priced imports in the Brazilian market. |
