Texas Instruments(TI)has released LM3463,which is a six-channel LED driver for high-power LED lighting applications. This LED driver is an addition to the already existing TI's range of LED drivers which include the eight-channel TLC5960 and the four-channel LM3464.
The LM3463 LED driver accommodates a wide input voltage ranging from 12 V to 95 V.The LM3463 has the capacity to drive a maximum of six strings of LEDs with high efficiency and accuracy.A maximum of 28 LEDs per string can be driven by this LED driver. The multiple dimming control feature of LM3463 enables to reduce the complexity surrounding LED lighting applications, such as ceiling,high-bay and street lights, and also enhances system efficiency. An external microcontroller easily manages the dimming control feature with the help of dimming input pins.
MOSFET thermal protection,LED open/short circuit,over-temperature shutdown and input under-voltage lock-out features are the protection features offered by the LM3463.The global analog brightness control feature, which operates independent of the dimming control feature, can protect the LED strings from conditions of over-temperature.In cases of applications that require LEDs with more than six strings, multiple LM3463 LED drivers can be employed in a master-slave type of configuration.
The dynamic headroom control feature of the LM3463 LED driver makes it suitable for high-power LED lighting applications. This feature adjusts the LED supply, which is needed for LED current conduction,to the minimum level, and thereby enhances system efficiency. The LM3463 LED driver individually and accurately controls the passage of current to each of the LED strings by working in combination with sense resistors and external N-channel MOSFETs.
