Solar wafer prices to fluctuate in May,says industry source Nuying Huang,Henan;Jackie Chang,DIGITIMES[Friday 11 May 2012]China's solar industry has been hit hard by oversupply in the market.Some firms are reportedly using shipments to repay debts.
According to industry sources,China-based firms reportedly ordered high numbers of solar equipment during boom times and the equipment has been sitting on the docks in China.Due to oversupply and significant price declines for solar products,firms have no ability to pay for the new equipment.Hence,some have been using solar product shipments to repay debts owed to equipment providers.Taiwan-based solar wafer firms worry that increasing shipments will likely push down solar wafer prices in May.
Solar newcomers in China have been facing shut-downs,especially in Zhejiang province.
The current price of 6-inch solar wafers in China is around US$1.01-1.10/unit.This price may not hold if dumping occurs.
China-based tier-one solar firms have been hit hard by the downturn in the market.2012 is the first year GCL-Poly will commit capacity expansion since the firm entered the market.LDK has laid-off a huge number of employees in 2012.
