Ukrainian Coal Production Rose 2.1% to 6.88 Million Mt in February

Ukrainian coal production in February rose 2.1% to 6.88 million mt from 6.74 million mt in February 2013, but was down from 7.01 million mt in January, the energy and coal industry ministry said Wednesday.

February output of thermal coal, which is used in power generation, increased by 4% to 4.91 million mt from 4.72 million mt a year earlier.

Production of coking coal, which is used in steel making, fell 2% to 1.97 million mt from 2.01 million mt in February 2013.

In January-February, coal production increased by 1.2%, or 170,000 mt, to 13.89 million mt, the ministry said.

Thermal coal production rose to 9.88 million mt in the first two months of the year from 9.64 million mt a year earlier, but coking coal output fell to 4.01 million mt from 4.08 million mt.

In 2013, Ukrainian coal production fell 2.6% to 83.7 million mt.

Thermal coal output in 2013 fell 1.9% year on year to 59.97 million mt and production of coking coal fell by 4.4% to 23.73 million mt.
