Cider Drinkers Achieves Great Succsess in UK

The number of people drinking cider is now more compared to the number of lager drinkers in the UK, according to Weston’s Cider, a Herefordshire-based cider producer.

Weston's Cider export head Peter Baldwin told Drinks International that according to December 2011 Mintel data, 47% of people drink cider, while 46% drink lager.

"The cider category is occupied by so many different styles, which is fundamental in appealing to both genders, as it enables consumers to experiment within the category for the first time," Baldwin said.

According to AC Neilsen, the fruit and pear cider category has showed a growth of 22% in 2011.

Baldwin said they have taken note of this and subsequently a limited edition Weston's Twist Raspberry will be rolled out into market this spring.

"I think that as this sector further evolves, pear cider drinkers will start to look to explore the more traditionally made, authentic perries on offer."

Weston's sells 93% of its cider in the UK and also exports to 30 international markets including Finland, Australia and Germany.
