The Government Will Make Dramatic Changes to The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme to Save Fund

The government confirmed earlier this month that it will make dramatic changes to the Carbon Reduction Commitment(CRC)energy efficiency scheme in order to save money.

These reforms were initially announced in the chancellor of the exchequer's Autumn Statement earlier this month and they will include the abolishing of energy performance league tables.

All state-funded schools have also been withdrawn from the scheme.

The government stated that it made the changes in order to simplify the CRC and reduce the administrative burden on businesses as they seek to try and reduce their carbon footprint.

It claimed that the changes could deliver as much as a 55 per cent reduction in costs, which constitutes around£272 million.

The scheme had drawn criticism for being over complex but this simplification package will"radically reduce"the costs.

However,Lighting Magazine's Ben Cronin, writing in his company blog, doubts whether the government is doing enough to support one of the few growth sectors in the country.

He said at last count the green economy grew by 4.7 per cent in 2011 and is approximately worth£12 billion a year.

The expert said once the chancellor has decided he could find better use for these revenues by recycling them back into the public purse, the government was forced to search for other ways in which finance green growth.

"People often say that one of the problems with the NHS is that just as one government starts to get to grips with it,another one comes along and rips up everything up because of party political and ideological convictions. It's easy to think that's exactly what happened with the CRC,"Mr Cronin continued.

Climate change minister Greg Barker said at the announcement of the simplification that the changes were being made in order to incentivise a greener future through the CRC.
