Urbis Sapphire lanterns are to be used in modernisation project
Following a decision by cabinet members yesterday, streetlights in Powys are to be switched back on.
Powys county council has been allocated £1.4 million to modernise the streetlights, which were turned off in 2008 due to high energy costs and concerns over the environmental impact of the lamps.
The council will now turn to LED technology in place of conventional lamps to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions in the county.
Jonathan Greatorex, a consumer rights activist, led a campaign for the lights to be switched back on in Powys. He said he was delighted that the council had "finally seen the light."
He added: "LED lights were something we championed back in 2008. The council's plans are hugely sensible and will keep Powys residents safe in the dark winter months."
Powys' in-house streetlighting team will install LED Sapphire lanterns from Urbis as part of the modernisation project. The work will begin in November and is expected to be completed within one year.
This is the second significant contract win for Urbis in recent months. The company's street lights were also chosen to illuminate parts of Hampshire national parks, in a £1 million project which is currently underway.
