21st Century Light Space Modulator Will Be Displayed at South Bank

21st Century Light Space Modulator to Be Unveiled at Southbank

The 18th October will mark the unveiling of Jason Bruges's eagerly anticipated interactive project 21st Century Light Space Modulator. It will be displayed under Hungerford Bridge, on London's South Bank.

Designed by Jason Bruges Studio and commissioned by Havells-Sylvania, the work will be shown at an underused section of the South Bank, which will be transformed into an architecturally lit, interactive space.

The work is the culmination of months of preparation which began in May 2102. The design process involved workshops and collaboration from design students from RIBA, Central St Martins and Bartlet School of Architecture, among others.

The installation pays homage to  László Moholy-Nagy's piece, the Light Prop for an Electric Stage. Designed between 1922 and 1929, the Light Space Modulator, as it is known, brings together moving sculpture and light art.

The Modulator reacts to human motion, meaning that members of the public are an essential component of the installation.

The launch will be marked by a performance from leading UK South Asian dance act Akademi, inviting visitors to 'dancewith the Modulator.'

Jason Bruges, founder of the Jason Bruges Studio, said "The21st Century Light Space Modulator explores not just the relationship between space and light, but also people's behaviour within a space."
