An LED handrail has been installed in order to illuminate the Divinity School in St John's College at the University of Cambridge.
The handrail was installed after a competition to refurbish the building. The refurbishment was supposed to add modern technology to allow the building to be used for classes and research, as well as keeping its traditional look.
Due to its stonework, traditional bulkhead methods of illumination were limited so instead of this AMA architects decided to use the LED handrail to light the five-flight staircase, LEDs Magazine reports.
The custom-made lighting solution was installed in a way so as to cause as little harm to the historic building and its unique charm as possible. This was achieved by using boarding to cover the stonework of the walls and staircase during the process.
Because the building has uneven landings, each core-drilled hole, which were needed to support the stanchions throughout the project, had to have their depth individually tailored to be certain that the handrail would level all the way through.
The handrail uses a warm white light with a colour temperature of 3000K and it uses asymmetric distribution in order to focus the lighting on the stairs, thus making it easier for people to walk up and down them.
