Huddling Under Layers of Cardigans &Light Jackets in Winter Makes You a Cosy Fashion Maven

There's just something about layers that gives things depth, importance, weight. Huddling under layers of cardigans and light jackets in winter makes you a cosy fashion maven. That second coat of paint is often the one that really makes a room come together. And there's a reason trifle is the best pudding.

And according to interior design guru and independent lighting design consultant Jo Hamilton, layered lighting is key to creating moody chic in your homes and interiors.

"I always talk about layers of light and how we need to have different types of light even just in one room," says Jo. "You might be running around after children in the morning, then you might have friends for lunch, then you might have a glass of wine and a bit of romance - so you need the light to be really versatile."

So whether you're running after children, scoffing trifle with friends or getting down and crazy with your partner on the dining room table, flexible lighting is an important consideration for whenever the mood strikes you to do something different with your home.

And, thankfully, to layer lighting doesn't mean you need to take out all of those modern ceiling lights and lamps that litter your home already - all it takes is a little electrical know-how and some dimmer switches.

"I love them," says Jo. "By putting everything on a dimmer switch it gives you complete control over how much impact you have with light, and how much you want to turn it down. It helps you create layers of light."

And you can match the layered look by continuing the theme across your home - starting with your textiles. According to interior designer Abigail Ahern, the layered look is set to be big in 2012, and layering up on top of your carpet is the perfect place to start.

"Rugs are great for adding that tactile element, and not just for open plan spaces," she says. "Use them as a pathway, and layer one over another if you dare."
