The Government Announce New Plans to Invest in Sustainable Energy Sources

Last week, the government announced new plans for investing in sustainable energy sources ahead of its long-awaited energy bill. The plans included £110 billion investment in technology like wind turbines and solar electricity, with much of the cost being absorbed by energy consumers.

In response to the announced plans, Which? executive director Richard Lloyd said that steps need to be taken to ensure that costs are kept under control - especially right now, as rising energy prices are a major financial concern for people across the country.

He also says that new energy supply contracts should be looked over by an independent panel of experts and consumer representatives before being presented to parliament.

"Real transparency and tough, independent scrutiny of the government's plans are now vital to avoid unnecessary costs that consumers can little afford," Mr Lloyd explained, adding that this would help to reassure households that they are getting the best value for money.

For those who are worried about the increase in electricity prices that will be coming over the next ten years, one way to help deal with the problem is to start investing in low-energy technology now.

For example, low-voltage downlights can help to reduce the amount of electricity needed to illuminate your home, and consumers are also urged to opt for LED bulbs. These use significantly less energy than other options, and also have much longer life spans, so you won't have to worry about replacing them as often.

Other ways to reduce your annual energy bill is to make sure your home is properly insulated - cavity walls and lofts should be fitted out with suitable insulation, and lined curtains can help to reduce the amount of heat lost through windows.

The government's plans were announced just a month after Ofgem announced a number of reforms aimed at simplifying the energy market, making it easier for consumers to get the best price for their energy. According to Which?, energy prices should be presented in a clear and consistent way, and that currently, only one in ten people are able to find the cheapest energy deal.
