A gypsum mine in Pingyi County, in east China's Shandong Province, reportedly collapsed on Friday morning.
Many people are believed to have been buried in the mine, but the number of casualties is currently unknown.
A rescue operation has been launched.
According to the China Earthquake Network Centre, the impact of the mine collape was equivalent to a 4.0 magnitude earthquake.
