Consumption of Pakistani cement in India is thinning out with total cement exports to the latter from the former standing at 183,387 tonnes in the first five months of the current fiscal year, down 38.5 percent compared with 298,214 tonnes in the corresponding period last year.
"Although overall cement export from Pakistan showed healthy growth of 11.71 percent in November 2012, it plunged alarmingly in case of India to 25,207 tonnes in November 2012 from 45,096 tonnes in November 2011," said a spokesman of the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) on Monday.
In November 2012, total cement dispatches stood at 2.649 million tonnes, up 17.47 percent compared with 2.255 million tonnes in November 2011.
And, it was for the first time that domestic consumption showed double digit growth year-on-year basis, he added.
However, they dropped 4.22 percent compared with the dispatches of 2.766 million tonnes in October 2012. Traditionally, cement sale in October happens to be higher than that in November.
During July-November 2012, total cement dispatches increased to 13.127 million tonnes from 12.691 million tonnes during the similar period a year ago. The cement exports posted a decline of 4.38 percent in July-November 2012.
Market analysts term the current domestic market situation as encouraging as during July-Nov 2012 the local consumption increased and decreased only in August by 3.41 percent. The local uptake of the commodity rose in two months out of the five during this fiscal year by over 19 percent. The first upward trend of 19 percent was recorded in September 2012 and the second in November 2012.
The cement exports from South zone during July-Nov 2011 were 0.986 million tonnes that declined in July-Nov 2012 to 0.837 million tonnes, depicting an overall reduction of 15.11 percent. The cement exports from North zone slid marginally by 0.67 percent to 2.804 million tonnes from 2.823 million tonnes previously.
