Quotes for LED chips used in backlight units (BLUs) of LCD TVs for the third quarter have dropped by 6-9% sequentially and those for LED BLUs for notebooks and LCD monitors by 5-8% and 1% respectively, according to LEDinside of Taiwan-based consulting company TrendForce.
In the China market, inventories of LED-backlit LCD TVs have reached high levels of 4-8 weeks, with weak demand resulting in decreased prices of LED chips used in BLUs, the source indicated. Third-quarter prices for LED chips used in 7020 single-chip and double-chip edge-type BLUs of LCD TVs have slipped by 9% and those for LED chips used in 4020 and 7030 packaging by about 6%.
Prices for LED chips used in smartphone BLUs for the third quarter have fallen by 3%. In addition, third-quarter prices for LED chips used in double-chip side-view smartphone BLUs have dropped by 6%.
For lighting applications, third-quarter prices for mid-power LED chips have remained unchanged while those for high-power models have dipped by up to 11%.
