More than 200 exhibits, depicting the myriad varieties of Indian textiles, will be put up on an upcoming display, which will be held as part of the London's Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum's India Season.
Slated to take place from September 26, 2015 to January 10, 2016, the exhibition titled The Fabric of India will aim to explore the intricacies and multifaceted nuances of handmade textiles from both ancient as well as modern day India.
With items dated back from 3rd to the 21st centuries, the display will not only offer an in-depth analysis of the skills, variety and adaptability of Indian textile makers but would also provide a closer look into the enduring techniques followed by the artisans for dyeing, weaving and embroidery purposes.
With a prime focus to highlight the hand-crafted textiles' relevance to Indian cultural identity, the exhibits will include textile pieces for religion and court uses, some fine highly priced creations meant for trading or exporting to foreign shores like Europe, the Middle East and South-East Asia, and an array of dresses and fabrics used for political reasons during the Independence Movement.
The major attractions of the display would include a royal tent that belonged to the early 18th century Indian ruler Tipu Sultan, few rare historic costumes, and a number of recent fashion creations made by contemporary Indian designers including Manish Arora and Rajesh Pratap Singh.
