Adam Kay Says Planting The 2012-13 Crop Is Now Well Underway in All Regions

Cotton Australia CEO, Adam Kay, says planting the 2012-13 crop is now well underway in all regions, with only minor setbacks caused by the recent bout of widespread colder weather.

This year Cotton Australia expects a 20 per cent reduction in combined irrigated and dryland plantings to about 440,000 hectares (previous season 560,000 hectares).

Briefly reviewing the 2011-12 season, Mr Kay said the crop exceeded even optimistic expectations, but with such a huge harvest (around 5.4 million bales) and pressure on ginners, it may well be Xmas time or later before the final figures are calculated.

“However, evidence from cotton ginned so far indicates much higher yields than anticipated, particularly in flood-affected areas, good gin turnouts, and maintenance of Australia’s sterling reputation for fibre quality.”
