Open Automotive Alliance (OAA), a consortium formed by automotive giants in collaboration with technology providers like Google, has launched an automotive specific operating system, the Android Auto at the Google I/O annual technology conference in San Francisco, US.
Android Auto is claimed to allow the drivers to access their Android device car apps using in vehicle MMI displays and controls that have been improved to offer better safety and vehicle experience.
OAA is a global alliance formed by Google, NVIDIA, Audi, Hyundai, Volvo and Honda for development of an open ecosystem with Android as common platform for cars in order to drive innovation and deliver better technology to drivers.

"With new partners across the automotive and technology industries, we've created an incredible foundation for bringing Android into automobiles with a seamless and connected experience that allows drivers to focus on the road," Brady added.
The automotive manufacturers are planning to introduce vehicles compatible with Android Auto in late 2015.
Android Auto will allow users to connect their Android smartphone to the vehicle's USB port as well as access applications and features using the car's in-dash display and voice controls.
Automotive manufacturers such as Bentley, FIAT, Nissan, Chrysler, Maserati, Mitsubishi, Maserati, Mazda, Renault, and ?koda have joined the consortium along with technology manufacturers like Clarion, CloudCar, LG, Panasonic, and Pioneer.
Audi Electrics/Electronics Development head Ricky Hudi said there can be no denying the connected car era has arrived, and with it comes the expectation that the data and functions provided by smartphone apps will seamlessly bridge to infotainment environments.
"The progress made with our Open Automotive Alliance partners shows how this can be achieved with safety and security at the forefront," Hudi added.
