Defence Authorisation Bill Likely to Be Approved by The US Senate Later This Week

The defence authorisation bill likely to be approved by the US Senate later this week does not include a controversial amendment requiring military branded garments sold at base retail stores to be sourced from signatories to the largely-European Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh.

The National Defense Authorization Act has been approved by the US House of Representatives.

Earlier versions of the legislation would have required military exchanges to only purchase apparel from members of the Accord.

Some US lawmakers had urged the measure after a number of garments and documents with US Marine insignias were found in the rubble of the Tazreen Fashions factory, which was destroyed by fire in November 2012, resulting in the death of 112 workers.
