The Toyologist: a Few Weeks as Eclectic as My Sock Collection

After pencilling in birthday celebrations, extensive press trips, events and launches and other shenanigans my diary for the coming weeks looks do-able (apart from two jam-packed days at BLE next week).

But recently, Toyology has been helping out on production this week for a brand new digital TV show for a men’s lifestyle magazine that airs in November, yours truly advising on technology and toys (oh and presenting a bit too) together with an eclectic collection of co-presenters that include two members of famous '80s bands – you’ll have to watch this space for specifics.

Earlier this week we had a rather daft “school night” out at the T3 magazine awards, fronted by Christian ‘I could be funnier’ O’Connell. Our Lord Sugar got a lifetime achievement gong - but he was ruder than a box of expletives when I asked him for a picture to send my daughter, a huge fan of The Apprentice, so we used the live on-screen Twitter feed to deliver some banter.

Sadly this epic tech magazine didn’t celebrate anything from the world of toys. Come on chaps, there’s a ton of top tech toys worth inclusion: we invented the new appcessory category this year and AppToyz versus AppGear would’ve been a tough one to call, remote control cars, flying things and gadgets which could easily have had heir own category.

At least The Gadget Show has embraced toys with the establishment of a new area at the ExCel Christmas show.

Do try and get down there and show your support because they have told me they have big plans for it moving forwards. Always looking for a Peter Pan opportunity, I’ll be demonstrating on behalf of the AppToyz brand over the three days.

Over the past few weeks my enterprise has been looking for some new approaches after a successful (in most cases) social media strategy combined with partnerships like magazine giveaways, decent PR and lots of TV advertising. It appears that our more guerrilla approach might be finally resonating with bigger brands. Not too much more to be said, well, we’d like to think our productions will be of Gangnam proportions.

Quick mention of our clichéd trip down memory lane Thursday as Atari had a pop-up arcade which celebrated old classics and we saw how they’re bringing them into the 21st century.

Imagine Defender, PONG and Asteroid all rebooted as new games with three decades of technology updates – They’re not just good, they turn minutes into hours – There’s a behind the scenes video that anyone into casual gaming needs to watch.
