U.S. states have increased electric vehicles registration fees in order to achieve the increase in government revenue, but Texas is going to follow the Washington state's electric car taxation. According to the state Transportation Commission Chairman Derby, Texas is considering taxing electric cars through legislation and related matters are discussed.

When asked on taxation of the electric car, Derby said, "More and more electric vehicles lead to overcrowded highway system and electric car owners should pay road maintenance costs. Texas has been committed to the development of the public transport system, which need adequate funding support. The increase in the number of electric cars has led to road maintenance difficulties, so the electric car tax is imperative."

Media raised objection to tax electric cars. Registration fees for electric cars are higher than ordinary cars, so it’s unfair to tax on electric cars. If it is electric cars that cause traffic congestion, why not taxing with car’s on-road time as a standard?
