Zimbabwe to Support Small Holder Poultry Farmers

The Zimbabwe government plans to support small holder poultry farmers to facilitate the growth of agriculture industry in the country.

The poultry industry, which is one of the fastest growing agricultural sector, is aiming to produce 72 million-day-old chicks, said the government.

The small scale poultry farmers have requested the government to help acquire processing facilities and markets for local chicken in order to properly face the competition from cheap imports.

Ministry of Agriculture Mechanisation and Irrigation Development secretary Ngoni Masoka said that with the establishment of the Agricultural Marketing Authority, the government will ensure that the contract farming arrangements will not be exploited.

The development of small scale producers will lead to the increase of production as well as improve the economic efficiency.
