CFIA Eliminates Restrictions in Order to Enhance Consumer Choice.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is planning to eliminate current restrictions that limit the size of containers for certain foods in order to enhance consumer choice.

The current restrictions on the size of containers for certain foods provide no food safety benefit, according to the CFIA.

The proposed changes would provide greater consistency across the food industry and allow it to take full advantage of new packaging innovation, formats and technologies

CFIA plans to introduce a formal consultation in 2013 as part of the standard regulatory amendment process. Proposed changes will include a flexible implementation time frame of up to five years.

If the changes are implemented, consumers will be able to compare prices and the CFIA plans to continue to enforce specific Canadian labelling requirements, such as bilingualism and weight.

Until the regulatory process is finalized, the current regulations will remain in force, and compliance and enforcement activities will continue.
