European Commission Has Adopted Two New Legislations

The European Commission has adopted two new legislations featuring an approved list of food flavoring substances.

According to the commission, the flavorings featured on the permitted list only will be allowed for use by the food industry, and the new legislations will clarify and harmonize the use of flavoring substances within the European single market.

The first regulation, which will be applied from 22 April 2013, will provide a new EU wide list of flavoring substances which can be used in food.

The second regulation addresses transitional measures for other flavorings such as those made from non-food sources, and will apply from 22 October 2012.

Health and Consumer Policy commissioner John Dalli said the legislation on flavoring substances will vastly improve the transparency of information to citizens and industry.

"It will be easier for all concerned to know exactly which flavouring substances can be used in food," Dalli added.

The new list includes more than 2,100 authorized flavoring substances, while a further 400 will remain on the market until European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concludes its evaluation.
