Energy Efficiency Subsidies Makes The TV Growth in Taiwan This Summer Largely

TV growth in Taiwan this summer largely due to energy efficiency subsidies Julian Ho,Taipei;Alex Wolfgram,DIGITIMES[Wednesday 4 July 2012]Increasing TV sales in Taiwan are due to price drops for 32-inch LED TVs along with energy subsidies being issued by the government and not because of the recent switch over to digital terrestrial broadcasting, according to various local TV brands.

It is estimated that TV shipments in Taiwan exceeded 100,000 units,or more than twice the amount in the same period last year.Sources say this is due to energy saving subsidies that include NT$2,000(US$60)for LCD TVs that were issued by Taiwan's government recently, and not because of channel digitalization.

Taiwan-based TV brand Sampo said the subsidies, coupled with dropping prices of 32-inch models have brought in increasing shipments. It estimated that LCD TV shipments at the end of the year will reach between 200-250,000 units, which will bring in approximately NT$200 million in revenues.

Other local TV brand Chimei said it has seen growing shipments since the subsidies were issued and that the market for consumers who use an LCD TV to view terrestrial digital channels is too small, making the recent switch over not as significant the subsidies.

BenQ meanwhile added that the subsidies have played a far larger role in helping the TV industry and pointed out that 90%of Taiwan TV users use cable services.
