New research has suggested that one in six British households will be vacant for more than 24 hours at a time over Christmas.
This has raised concerns over security and safety, according to Santander Insurance.
Figures have shown that more than a quarter (27 per cent) of the people stating they will be away for more than a day at a time, say they will leave their tree lights on so that the property will appear occupied.
Those that are thinking of doing this should really try and get hold of LED lights because they will use much less energy, thus making sure your bills are as reduced as possible.
It will also cut down on the risk of fire as LEDs do not get as hot as traditional bulbs.
Indeed, Marc Shkolnick of Lincoln Electric System recently told 1011 News that LEDs pose a much smaller threat of fire.
Santander Insurance also noted that people could be compromising the fact that their homes could be empty by posting about it on social networking sites.
In total nine per cent of Britons will be away on Christmas Day and seven per cent on Boxing Day.
Around seven per cent will vacate their homes in the week leading up to December 25th, while six per cent will be away from the house on New Year's Eve.
Richard Al-Dabbagh of Santander Insurance said it is easy for some people to forget about all the valuables they have in the house when getting wrapped up in the excitement of Christmas.
"It's important to protect your home over the festive period as darker nights and an abundance of valuable gifts mean that burglary and opportunistic crime is rife at this time of year," he added.
"Prevention is always better so we're also advising people to take heed of some simple tips that will help to keep their homes and possessions safe this Christmas."
