Canada Alters Import Requirements of Aquatic Animals to Protect Its Aquatic Animal

Canada has changed the import requirements of aquatic animals such as finfish, molluscs, and crustaceans, in an effort to protect the country's aquatic animal resources.

Beginning 10 December 2012, the aquatic animals shipments will require an import permit to enter the country. The import permits contain specific requirements based on the disease risks associated with the animal, the origin, and other relevant health information.

Imported aquatic animals require health certification from the country of origin, to ensure that the animals imported into Canada, meet Canada's aquatic animal health requirements.

If aquatic animals are imported without required documentation, a shipment could be refused entry into Canada.

CFIA noted that importers must apply in advance by completing an application form. A completed application form should be faxed or mailed to a Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) Area office for this purpose.
